The 9 Best Powerlifting & Weightlifting Gyms in Liverpool

What makes a good Powerlifting Gym?

As Liverpool’s a big city, there are some key things to factor in:

  • Location: Obviously this is completely personal, but as a Liverpool gymgoer the chances are you will rely on public transport to some extent. So it needs to be easily accessible and not in the middle of a rancid industrial park. Ideally most gyms will be as close to the centre of Liverpool as possible.
  • Cost: Pretty obvious, but a powerlifting gym shouldn’t be too expensive. The equipment doesn’t need to be state of the art, but we need racks and platforms. They should (hopefully) provide a free taster session for anyone interested – but I will link you to a one-off session available on hussle for each gym.
  • Quality: Quality in this scenario doesn’t simply refer to the quality of equipment on offer.  I don’t mind something rough and ready as opposed to sparkling when it comes to weightlifting. This is also to do with changing room and toilet quality, staff friendliness, pre-workout and protein stock, atmosphere etc.
  • Cleanliness: For me a powerlifting gym doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact I want some scrapes and scratches on the equipment. A little grit, sweat and spit never hurt anyone. What I hate is dusty floors and weights left scattered all over the gym.
  • Equipment Availability: An empty weightlifting gym is a ship without a captain. Soulless. Devoid of a certain energy that ironheads need to reach their peak. It’s got to be gritty, but friendly. Encouraging, but also a little intimidating. Proper.

So that’s my quality rating for each gym. Each will be marked out of 5 with relevant links to review pages and links for one off session purchases.

I’ll then give a total score out of 20 to celebrate the overall Liverpudlian winner.

I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed collating it.

Crossfit River Mersey

Cumulative Score: 18.8

Look I know this is a crossfit gym and it’s not particularly central, but hear me out.

The facilities are incredible. The number of squat racks, platforms and Olympic plates make this well worth a spot on the list.

If you’re keen to learn more about Olympic lifting then this is certainly one to try.

Empowered Fit

Cumulative Score: 18.6

I know the Wirral isn’t technically Liverpool (I know, I’ve been there), this enormous independent gym has smashing facilities.

It’s open 24/7, so excellent for shift workers and night owls. Whilst it’s a place for dedicated lifters, it’s a fun place to train. No danger of it feeling like a chore.

The incredible atmosphere, facilities and pricing make Empowered Fit the editors choice.

Dedicated Fitness XL

Cumulative Score: 18.3

Another 24 behemoth of a gym, Dedicated Fitness XL is packed full of wannabe and pro bodybuilders.

It’s cracking value and is a really serious arena to take your training seriously. You do get a lot of steroid users (not libelous) and big lads there, so if you may find that intimidating it might not be for you.

University of Liverpool Centre

Cumulative Score: 18.9

Pro Tip: University’s tend to fantastic places to train.

  • It’s usually not too busy at peak hours

The University of Liverpool is no different. If you’re serious about Olympic weightlifting or powerlifting, then you should revel in this kind of environment. Platforms, racks and plates aplenty.

Nuffield Health Liverpool

Cumulative Score: 17.6

One of the more commercial gyms on the list, the Liverpool Nuffield is more for the leisurely gymgoer.

Whilst the gym has a solid range of bodybuilding and muscle building equipment, it lacks a certain je ne sais quoi. Mainly because it’s nice, not tough.

Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It still has all the racks and platforms you could ever need.

Jericho Lane

Cumulative Score: 18.2

Situated right next to the River Mersey, this brand new facility has 80 different stations including:

  • Adjustable benches and free weights
  • Squat racks

Brilliantly kitted out with top quality Olympic weights and racks, this is a bit of a mecca given the price.

Cumulative Score: 19.2

One of the few genuinely elite powerlifting facilities anywhere in the UK. Taylor’s Strength Training trains legitimate powerlifters and strongman.

They hold British records and if you’re looking to take the sport seriously and grow as an athlete, then this is the place to be.
